At Netherclay Home Care, we are always looking for innovative ways to improve on and expand the services that we offer. We look at issues within the care sector and try to come up with solutions. One of the ways we do this is to take the strengths and skills we have developed through running our sister services – Netherclay House, Chelston Gardens and Chelston Park – and apply them to domiciliary care.

Our hospital to home service is a good example of this. As the name suggests, we provide clients a way back to their homes after a stay in hospital. Of course, in the main, this service is depended on the skill of the organisers who work in our central office. But we also add other touches. To ensure a comfortable transition from the hospital, the catering staff from Chelston Gardens – one of our care homes – ensure that there is a meal waiting for our clients when when they arrive home.

Another example of how our services support each other is “The Big Lunch.”

Following Age UK 1.9 million of the 3.6 million elder people who live alone feel invisible or ignored. Loneliness can have a significant impact on the health of those affected. Inspired by the Eden Project’s “The Big Lunch” our idea is to offer something different to our home care community.

Chelston Park is a period property that faces onto the Blackdown Hills. Chelston is set in beautiful grounds which have views of the Wellington Monument. The gardens are delightful in summer. We thought it was the perfect location for hosting our Big Lunch. Unfortunately, although we expected the weather to be good by the end of May, you can never tell in England and we ended up eating inside.

For the lunch, our catering team prepared a special menu and seven of our home care clients enjoyed lunch together with their carers and some of the residents of Chelston Park. Despite the weather, people said they enjoyed the change of scenery and made some new friends – in fact two of our clients discovered that they lived a few doors from each other and hoped to keep in contact in the future.

Speaking to a couple of our clients afterwards, they gave voice to the issue that we had been trying to do a little to help:

“It can get very lonely being on your own. Sometimes the only face you will see for days is that of your carer. Hopefully you can organise more events like this in the future.”

We are indeed planning to organise more events like this. The plan is to host the Big Lunch three times a year: in spring, summer and autumn. (Hopefully the weather will hold up for the next one!)

We also have other, similar initiatives in the pipeline. We run bespoke days out for our clients who want to get out of the house and we want to start doing more of these sorts of trips as a group. The ideas for day trips include a trip to the donkey sanctuary, trips to the seaside, lunch out at a garden centre, a ride on the West Somerset Railway and later in the year we want to take people to see the Christmas lights.

In our previous few posts we have focused on the training and pay. But our Big Lunch and other projects are examples of how our community-oriented approach to care can benefit our clients and add some variety to the work of the Netherclay Home Care carers.
